Stand Up Paddle Board and Kayak Demo Event

Join us for a fun filled paddling weekend on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula! This is a beginner friendly event with stand up classes taught by guest instructor/author Rob Casey. In addition to learning stand up boarding, you will have a plethora of kayaks to demo, including Dagger, Perception, Valley, North Shore and pedal boats by Native Watercraft.

Saturday's on-water classes and demos will be followed by a cook out for everyone at Harbinger Winery. Rob will be available to discuss his new book, "Stand Up Paddling- flatwater to surf."

On Sunday, join Rob and learn how to take your SUP skills to the next level while learning how to Surf your SUP at Crescent Beach.

Mountain bikers- the Adventure Route trail is now 90% groomed single track! The volunteers have put in massive hours to make this happen; they do a fantastic job removing rocks, roots and anything that your tires cannot flow over. The trail is smooth, flowy and in great shape. Contact us with any questions you have about this great trail and the recreational benefits it has for you.

The Sol Duc River with it's wave trains, boulder gardens, and water slides is up and waiting for winter adventurers. Great things are happening here on the Olympic Peninsula from the endless outdoor treasures- rivers, lakes, mountains, glaciers, beaches to the annual Juan de Fuca music festival. We are so fortunate to live here and share this amazing area with people visiting from all parts of the world!

To get out there and soak up the forests, beaches, trails, and lakes with all the best equipment, we are now offering rental punchcards for kayaks, bikes, and stand up paddle (SUP) boards, which means your tenth rental is always free. Yes, it's OK to go together on a punchcard with your friends- and rental punchcards can be mixed and matched with all three types of equipment- kayaks, bikes, and SUP's. You might ask, where would I kayak and/or SUP? Well, there are a number of great places, one of my favorites is the glacially carved Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park where you'll glide over the deepest blue water in the midst of Mt. Storm King and Pyramid Mtn staring down at you. Other great kayak/SUP destinations are Freshwater Bay and Lake Aldwell, both situated near Port Angeles and Olympic National Park.

And, then you might ask, "whereabouts is the best place to mountain bike?" Again, there are some sweet options very close, including our newest and most fantastic trail, the Adventure Route portion of the Olympic Discovery Trail. A number of great options are available on this trail depending on how far you would like to ride and what type of experience is suitable for your group. When you pick up your rental bikes (car racks available,) we will get you a free map and go over some great options including two loop rides. Another trail within only a few minutes of Adventures Through Kayaking is the Spruce Railroad Trail that travels along the northern shores of Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park.

So you're looking for something new and adventurous?? Learn how to Stand Up Paddleboard, SUP is the fastest growing, newest watersport sweeping the country; it all started in Hawaii many years ago and now the mainland is catching onto the fun. SUPing feels like walking on water- while you glide on top, you get to see all the colorful critters below. Adventuring 7 Days a Week!

So you've been wondering what 2010 trips are available and when?? Well, we are now in full swing with all kayaking and mountain biking trips going out everyday of the week. For those of you have joined us in the past you know that we keep the group sizes small and the trips do fill up, that way you get maximum fun! Don't worry if you have a large group, give us a call and we will set up a private trip to meet the goals of your party. Last year our 3 most popular trips were the new full day NW Adventure, the half day kayaking to Freshwater Bay, and half day mountain biking on the Adventure Route.

What's new this year, you ask? With the positive response of folks on the Adventure Route biking trip having a super time, we asked them how we could improve on this trip. The main response was- "I'd like to go biking for the entire day." So there you have it, we now offer a full 20 mile day of riding the rolling hills, sweeps, banks, and turns of the Adventure Route.

Keep in mind that paddlers and pedalers alike can rent kayaks, bikes and even stand up paddle boards for exploring the vastness of Olympic National Park and the Olympic Peninsula. So what are you waiting for, let's go adventuring!

Tis ' the Season to Play

Well here we are, Spring- yippee. Sunshine, warmth, blue skies- all those good things to get us outside movin' and shakin'. It is time to paddle and what a great place we live to get out on the water. We might even get lucky with the gray whale migration and get to see one of the gentle giants; whether we do or not, the seals, otters, sealions and the myriad of underwater critters are all waiting for us to come check 'em out. In other words, let's go paddlin!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 3rd Annual Humane Society Fundraiser; due to your generosity we raised over $4500.

As a side note, NW paddling has been absolutely fantastic. All about mystery, low flowing mist overlayed by a gray overall ominous feeling while on the water, I can't help but to think of all the Twighlight fans out there. While I have not seen any vampires or werewolves while paddling this winter, the conditions have been spectacular!

Over 35 new kayaks now in the store! This week we unloaded, removed tape, and unwrapped all the new Perception and Dagger kayaks. From the lightweight 38 lb. Tribute to the new Tribe sit on top. My absolute favorite new kayak by Dagger is the Alchemy, a shorter version of a full blown high performance sea kayak; this little gem is a perfect rock gardening and surfing sea kayak. Whether your NW paddling is on the lakes and rivers of Olympic National Park or the Strait of Juan de Fuca, we now have many options for your paddling style.

As a side note, we take extra time to ensure all the packaging materials are kept as clean as possible so we can reuse the plastic for a variety of uses; some people use the plastic for their home businesses, moving, and even for ground cloth for gardening.

Whale Sightings!

While out on one of our kayaking tours we were lucky enough to spot four gray whales. The kayak tour began at Freshwater Bay, went to Salt Creek Recreation Area and back, seems the greys have begun their migration back to northern waters. We are lucky in the Port Angeles area to have individuals and small groups, usually a female with calf in tow coming into the Strait of Juan de Fuca finding food. On the same kayak tour, we also spotted a number of bald eagles; they were high on their perches watching us from above.

While Olympic National Park's Hurricane Ridge is continuing to get loads of snow, recreating in the lowlands has made for some great paddling. It's time to get the kayaks dusted off, as the kayaking and touring season is upon us. We at Adventures Through Kayaking look forward to paddling the Washington Coast with you!

Olympic Peninsula Rivers are Up!

Yes, Olympic Peninsula river kayaking has been a bit dry this winter. But never fear, we know the rains come eventually, and so it has. Kayaking Washington State's Elwha is now an option, last week the river elevated to an intermediate level of 2000 cfs and now today it's still at a great level of 980 cfs. So it is time to get out those river kayaks and go enjoy some Northwest river kayaking. If anyone is looking for river kayaking buddies feel free to post or let us know. There are a few folks looking for paddling buddies particularly on the weekends.

I should let you know these whales fully approached our kayaks- as we were watching them from a distance we could see their backs getting larger as they moved toward us. We let them know we were there by tapping on the side of our kayaks and tapping the water with our paddles. At one time they went out in deep water and began breaching and slapping their tales. At anytime we could look around us in a 360 degree view and see whales spouting. This is not a figment created through Photoshop; the whales are in the Straits.
